Here are some updates to European Union (EU) visa rules for 2024:-
- Visa-free travel
On March 13, 2024, the EU Council agreed to update a mechanism that allows the EU to suspend visa-free travel for third countries. This new law will give the EU more tools to counter situations where visa-free travel is abused or works against the EU’s interests.
- Travel authorization
Starting in 2024, citizens from more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., will need to obtain a travel authorization to enter most European countries.
- Schengen visas
On April 25, 2024, the European Commission updated rules on Schengen visas for nationals of Bahrain, India, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Indian nationals who have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the preceding three years are now eligible for a multiple-entry, two-year Schengen visa.
- Maximum stay
As of March 31, 2024, third-country nationals may not exceed a total of 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen States, regardless of whether they are required to hold a visa or are exempt from such a requirement.
